The Dome of the Rock

Caliph Abd al Malik completes the golden domed sanctuary in Jerusalem, the oldest surviving masterpiece of Islamic architecture.

Built on the noble sanctuary of al Aqsa, the Dome of the Rock crowned Jerusalem with an octagon of mosaics, calligraphy and gold. Its inscriptions are among the earliest monumental writings of the Quran. Thirteen centuries later it still defines the skyline of the holy city.
