Ayyub AS had everything. Wealth, health, a large family, respect in his community. He was a prophet of Allah who was also blessed with worldly abundance.
Then it was all taken away.
The Loss
His children died. His wealth vanished. His body was struck with a severe illness that lasted for years. Some narrations describe sores covering his entire body. He became so ill that people avoided him.
His community abandoned him. His friends stopped visiting. People who had eaten at his table now crossed the street to avoid him.
Only his wife stayed. She worked to feed them both, sometimes selling her own hair to buy bread.
Through all of it, Ayyub AS did not complain to anyone. He did not curse his fate. He did not ask "why me?"
The Patience
The scholars differ on how long Ayyub AS suffered. Some say 7 years. Some say 18. Some say longer.
During that entire time, his worship did not decrease. His gratitude did not waver. He continued to praise Allah with the same tongue that could have easily spoken words of despair.
People around him said: "What kind of prophet is this? Allah must be punishing him." Even some of his close companions suggested he must have committed a great sin.
He had not. This was not punishment. This was elevation.
The Dua
After years of patient suffering, Ayyub AS finally called upon his Lord. But look at how he did it:
"Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." (Al Anbiya 21:83)
He did not say: "Why are you doing this to me?" He did not say: "I deserve better." He did not list his grievances.
He simply stated the fact of his suffering and then praised Allah's mercy in the same breath. That is adab with Allah. That is how a prophet complains.
The Restoration
Allah responded immediately:
"Strike the ground with your foot; this is a spring for a cool bath and drink." (Sad 38:42)
His health was restored. His wealth returned. His family was replaced. The Quran says Allah gave him back his family and the like of them with it, as mercy from Allah and a reminder for those of understanding.
Everything came back. But it only came back because he never demanded it. He was patient not because he expected a reward. He was patient because he knew who Allah is.
What This Means for You
You will go through seasons where it feels like everything is being stripped away. Your health. Your money. Your relationships. Your sense of purpose.
Ayyub AS teaches us that the stripping is not the end of the story. It is the middle.
The people who abandoned him, they missed the restoration. The people who mocked his faith, they were not there when Allah brought everything back multiplied.
Your suffering has an expiration date. Your patience does not.
The question is not "when will this end?" The question is "who will I be while it lasts?"
Will you be the person who complained and crumbled? Or will you be the person who said, in the middle of the worst of it: "You are the Most Merciful of the merciful."
"Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back to Allah." (Sad 38:44)
