Before prophethood, the people of Makkah called him Al Amin, The Trustworthy. They gave him that name. The same people who would later try to kill him.
That tells you everything about who Muhammad ﷺ was.
The Early Years
His father died before he was born. His mother died when he was six. His grandfather, who took him in, died when he was eight. He was orphaned three times before most children lose their first tooth.
He grew up in the care of his uncle Abu Talib. He never had wealth. He never had status. He worked as a shepherd, then as a merchant.
But everyone who dealt with him said the same thing: this man does not lie. This man does not cheat. This man can be trusted with anything.
The Revelation
When the first revelation came in the cave of Hira, he was terrified. He ran home to Khadijah shaking and said: "Cover me, cover me."
She did not dismiss him. She said: "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your relatives, you bear the burden of the weak, you help the poor and the needy, you are generous to your guests, and you assist those who are afflicted by calamity."
She knew his character. She knew that a man like this could not be abandoned by God.
Taif
Three years into his mission, after losing both Khadijah and Abu Talib in the same year, the Prophet ﷺ walked to Taif to seek support. He was alone. He was grieving. He was hopeful.
The people of Taif rejected him. Then they sent their children and slaves to chase him out, throwing stones until his sandals filled with blood.
He collapsed outside the city. Jibreel came to him with the Angel of the Mountains and offered to crush the people of Taif between the two mountains.
He said no.
He said: "Perhaps Allah will bring from their descendants people who will worship Him alone."
Bleeding, exhausted, rejected by everyone. And his first thought was mercy for their children.
The Conquest of Makkah
Years later, he returned to Makkah with 10,000 soldiers. The city that had tortured him, boycotted him, driven him out, killed his companions, was now at his mercy.
Every military leader in history would have taken revenge. He had every right.
He stood at the Ka'bah and asked: "What do you think I will do with you?"
They said: "You are a noble brother, son of a noble brother."
He said: "Go. You are free."
No executions. No prison. No retribution. He forgave the entire city.
This is not weakness. This is the highest form of strength: the power to punish and choosing mercy instead.
What This Means for You
The Prophet ﷺ was not kind because life was easy. He was kind because that is who he chose to be, regardless of circumstances.
When someone wrongs you, you get to choose who you are in that moment. When business is hard, when family is difficult, when the world feels hostile, your character is the one thing no one can take from you.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved of you to me and the nearest to me in the Hereafter are those with the best character."
Character is not built in comfort. It is built in the exact moments you want to abandon it.
Be the person people trust. Be the person who forgives when they could destroy. Be the person who shows up with mercy when the world expects revenge.
That is the Sunnah. That is the path.
