Nine hundred and fifty years.
That is how long Nuh AS called his people to Allah. Not nine hundred and fifty days. Years.
To put that in perspective: the entire history of the United States is about 250 years. Nuh AS spent almost four times that doing one thing: inviting people to the truth.
And almost no one listened.
The Rejection
The Quran describes what Nuh AS faced. He called them day and night. He called them publicly and privately. He tried every approach.
"He said: My Lord, indeed I invited my people night and day. But my invitation increased them not except in flight." (Nuh 71:5 6)
They put their fingers in their ears. They covered themselves with their garments. They were arrogant. They mocked him.
The elite of his society said: "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us." (Hud 11:27)
The same insult every prophet faced. You are not special. Your followers are nobodies. Why should we listen to you?
Nuh AS did not stop.
The Ark
Allah commanded Nuh AS to build a massive ark, far from any body of water. His people laughed at him. A boat in the desert. A prophet who has lost his mind.
"And every time the chiefs of his people passed by him, they mocked him." (Hud 11:38)
He kept building.
When the flood came, Allah told him to load the ark with his family and the believers. After 950 years of calling, the number of believers who boarded was so small the Quran does not even give a specific number. Scholars estimate between 10 and 80 people.
950 years of work. And fewer than 80 people listened.
His Son
The most devastating moment in the story is not the flood. It is the conversation with his son.
As the water rose, Nuh AS saw his son standing apart, refusing to board.
"O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers." (Hud 11:42)
His son said: "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water."
Nuh AS said: "There is no protector today from the decree of Allah."
And a wave came between them, and his son was among the drowned.
Nuh AS, heartbroken, called out to Allah: "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family, and indeed Your promise is true."
Allah responded: "O Nuh, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is one whose work was other than righteous." (Hud 11:46)
Your lineage does not save you. Your father being a prophet does not save you. Only your own choices matter.
What This Means for You
Nuh AS teaches us that results are not in your hands. Effort is.
You might be doing the right thing and seeing no results. You might be working on your deen, building your business, raising your kids, trying to improve yourself, and it feels like nothing is changing. Nobody is listening. Nobody cares.
950 years.
If Nuh AS did not quit after 950 years, you do not get to quit after 950 days.
Your job is not to control outcomes. Your job is to keep showing up. To keep building the ark even when people laugh. To keep calling even when they cover their ears. To keep being faithful even when the people closest to you walk away.
"So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth." (Ar Rum 30:60)
