Al-Khwarizmi and the Birth of Algebra

In Baghdad, al Khwarizmi writes the book of al Jabr, giving the world algebra and, through his name, the algorithm.

Muhammad ibn Musa al Khwarizmi systematized the solving of equations in his Kitab al Jabr wal Muqabalah, from which algebra takes its name. His works carried the Hindu Arabic numerals westward, and the Latin form of his name gave us the word algorithm. He wrote to serve practical needs of inheritance, trade and surveying.
