The Battle of Tours

The northern advance of Umayyad forces into Frankish lands halts near Tours, marking the far edge of expansion into western Europe.

A raiding force led by Abd al Rahman al Ghafiqi met the army of Charles Martel between Tours and Poitiers, and the commander fell in battle. Muslim chronicles remember the field as Balat al Shuhada, the pavement of the martyrs. Andalusi civilization continued to flourish south of the Pyrenees for many centuries after.
