The Nizamiyyah Colleges

The vizier Nizam al Mulk builds a network of endowed colleges, shaping organized higher education for centuries.

The Nizamiyyah of Baghdad, with sisters in Nishapur and other cities, offered salaried professors, student stipends and libraries, all sustained by charitable endowment. Al Ghazali taught there at the height of his fame. The endowed college became one of Islamic civilization’s great institutional gifts to education.
