Suleiman the Magnificent

Under Suleiman the Lawgiver, the Ottoman state reaches its height in law, power and art, and Sinan raises its great mosques.

Reigning forty six years, Suleiman codified law so thoroughly that Ottomans called him Kanuni, the Lawgiver. His court gathered poets and calligraphers while the architect Sinan built hundreds of works, crowned by the Suleymaniye. He also rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem that still ring the old city today.
